What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium screws that are embedded in the gum and jawbone, then topped with a false tooth or dental bridge to conceal and replace any missing teeth. The bone heals around the screw, keeping your new tooth locked in place.

The dental implant procedure

Whether you need a single implant to replace one missing tooth or replacements for all your teeth, Harley Street Specialist Hospital can help. This type of surgery may need several appointments. Here’s how the dental implant procedure works at our London dental clinic:

1. Assessment and diagnosis — We use state-of-the-art dental imaging and diagnostics tools to assess your oral health and decide if you’re eligible for dental implants.

2. Tooth imaging — If you need new crowns or bridges, we’ll take images of your teeth so we can create custom versions that fit your mouth perfectly.

3. Local anaesthetic — You’ll be given local anaesthetic to numb the area before the procedure. If you’re nervous, you might also be offered a sedative.

4. Tooth removal (if needed) — The dentist will remove any decayed or damaged teeth.

5. Bone grafting (if needed) — If your jawbone isn’t strong enough to support dental implants, you may need a bone graft. The graft will take place a few months before your dental implant insertion.

6. Dental implant insertion — The surgeon makes a small incision in the gum, then creates a small hole in your jawbone using a surgical drill. They’ll then insert the dental implant into the hole and stitch up your gum.

7. Abutment and/or temporary teeth fitting — If possible, your surgeon will affix an abutment (a small connector that attaches the crown to the implant) during the same procedure. Some patients may need to let the gum heal first, in which case temporary teeth may be fitted at this stage.

8. Permanent teeth fitting — IPermanent replacement teeth are normally fitted at the same time as your abutment. This often happens a few weeks or months after the dental implants are inserted. 

9. Recovery — Our team will monitor you in hospital for a few hours after the procedure.

Even if you need more than one surgical appointment, most patients can go home the same day as their dental implant surgery.

In most cases, no. Dental implants are usually considered a cosmetic procedure, which means they’re not available for free on the NHS.
