Knee pain treatments available at our London hospital

Knee replacement surgery

A knee replacement involves removing damaged elements of your knee joint and replacing them with artificial parts made of metal or plastic. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may need a partial or total knee replacement.

A knee replacement offers long-term relief for people suffering from chronic knee conditions like osteoarthritis and gout.

Treatable conditions with knee replacement surgery
  • Knee arthritis
  • Gout (more rarely)
  • Sports injuries (more rarely)

Knee cartilage surgery

Knee cartilage is thick, smooth tissue that covers your kneecap and protects your knee joint. Over time, knee cartilage can wear away, leaving your joints sore and crunchy. Knee cartilage surgery is designed to treat knee cartilage damage by reattaching or removing pieces of cartilage that have become detached.

Knee cartilage surgery is usually only recommended for major cartilage damage (e.g. if it’s too painful to put any weight on your leg) and/or if non-invasive treatments haven’t worked.

Treatable conditions with knee cartilage surgery
  • Loose bodies in the knee
  • Knee cartilage injuries

Knee arthroscopy and meniscus repair

Knee arthroscopy (also known as meniscus repair) is a type of keyhole surgery in which a surgeon inserts a tiny camera into your knee joint to identify the cause of pain. This can be used to both diagnose and treat knee problems.

If treatment is needed, your surgeon may be able to perform knee cartilage surgery as part of your arthroscopy. They may also perform a biopsy or more complex surgery to repair the damaged tissue.

Treatable conditions with knee arthroscopy
  • Loose bodies in the knee
  • Knee cartilage injuries
  • Meniscus tears
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
  • Other knee ligament damage
  • Knee arthritis

Knee ligament surgery

Knee ligament surgery is designed to treat a damaged or torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The ACL may be ruptured when playing contact sports, landing awkwardly when running or jumping, or changing direction suddenly.

Knee ligament surgery usually involves reconstructing your ACL by replacing the damaged ligament with a tendon from another part of your body. Less often, knee ligament surgery can treat a posterior cruciate ligament injury or medial patellofemoral ligament tear.

Treatable conditions with knee ligament surgery
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
  • Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries
  • Medial patellofemoral ligament (MCL) injuries
  • Other knee ligament damage
  • Sports injuries and trauma

Knee osteotomy

Knee osteotomy is a surgical procedure used to correct a misaligned knee joint. It works by shifting weight away from the problematic area onto undamaged parts of the knee.

Types of knee osteotomy include tibial and femoral osteotomy. A tibial osteotomy involves correcting the shin bone (below the kneecap), while a femoral osteotomy is performed on the thigh bone (above the kneecap).

Treatable conditions with knee osteotomy
  • Knee misalignment
  • Early stages of knee arthritis
  • Non-specific knee joint damage

Knee tendon surgery

Knee tendon surgery may be needed to treat a torn or damaged tendon in the knee (also known as a patellar tendon tear). If your tendon has torn completely, you will likely need surgical tendon repair.

This procedure involves stitching the tendon where the damage has occurred and then reattaching it to the kneecap in the correct position.

Treatable conditions with knee tendon surgery
  • Knee tendon injuries

Knee trochleoplasty

Knee trochleoplasty is a type of surgery designed to stop your kneecap from becoming dislocated. It’s usually only offered if you have severe trochlear dysplasia (kneecap instability).

Trochleoplasty stabilises the kneecap to reduce pain and improve knee strength. We might also recommend ligament and/or tendon surgery to strengthen your knee further.

Treatable conditions with knee trochleoplasty
  • Trochlear dysplasia (kneecap instability)
  • Kneecap dislocation

Knee brace

A knee brace is a non-invasive treatment that helps treat knee fractures, reduce joint pain and stabilise your knee before, after, or instead of surgery. It provides extra support for your knee joint, allowing you to gradually increase your mobility.

Treatable conditions with a knee brace
  • Kneecap fracture
  • Weak knee or leg muscles
  • Knee arthritis
  • Knee misalignment
  • Supportive therapy for knee surgery and other treatments

Physiotherapy for knee pain

Physiotherapy is a first-line treatment for many different knee problems. A combination of regular, approved strengthening exercises along with manual leg manipulation can improve symptoms of knee pain in many instances.

Treatable conditions with knee pain physio
  • Sciatica
  • Weak knee or leg muscles
  • Sports injuries
  • Supportive therapy for knee surgery and other treatments
