Self-pay: a step-by-step guide
1. Choosing a Consultant
Consultation fees vary depending on which consultant you choose, but mostly range from £200 to £350 for an initial consultation. Our team will be able to tell you the specific consultation fee of your chosen consultant when you contact us.
You can browse our directory of consultants or contact our enquiries team to learn more.
2. Your consultation
Consultations last from 15 minutes to one hour, depending on the speciality, consultant and your individual needs. Anything that you discuss with your consultant is private and confidential.
Virtual consultations
Introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic many consultants have kept virtual consultations, where appropriate, so you may well be able to get easy access to senior medical experts over the phone or via conference call. If you would prefer a virtual consultation please ask the team who would be happy to advise if this is possible.
3. Diagnostics
At HSSH we have direct access to world-class scanning in the form of MRI, CT scan and X ray. If your consultant recommends a scan or test, this will usually be booked for another day. In some cases, like blood tests and X-Rays, it may be possible for you to have this done on the same day. Your consultant will want to see you again after you have had your scans and tests to discuss your results and your treatment pathway options, which may include further tests, outpatient treatments, or potentially surgery.
4. Booking your procedure
HSSH will write to you with a guide price for the procedure, which will cover all of the elements needed for your care, depending on the specific procedure you have. This guide price will become a package price once your pre-admission assessment is complete. Occasionally, pre-admission assessments uncover additional clinical needs that may incur extra costs.
5. Paying for treatment
Spreading the cost of treatment
To help you spread the cost of your care, HSSH are partnered with Chrysalis FInance which offer competitive interest rates on medical loans. You can find out more information on the terms and rates available by contacting our enquiries team.
6. Follow-up and aftercare
Orthopaedic procedures will need a number of physiotherapy sessions, which will also be included in your procedure fee.
Our team are happy to talk to you about any specific self-pay questions you might have, please contact our enquiries team today for all the information you need.
Frequently asked questions
Can I go back to the NHS?
The answer is yes you can. You are still entitled to NHS care even if you have paid for private care. There is a more detailed guide here for you produced by the NHS. The NHS asks for clear separation between treatment you receive on the NHS and treatment that you have paid for privately. Having a problem treated privately does not preclude from going back to the NHS in the future.
Will I see the same NHS consultant?
Many medical experts and consultants work in both NHS and private practice. It may be possible to see a consultant that you have been introduced to on the NHS, or that you are on a waiting list to see. However, if you are paying for your treatment then it is your choice to choose the consultant that you would like to see.
Do I need a referral letter to see a consultant?
As a self-pay patient, it may be possible for you to see a consultant without a referral letter from your GP or other clinician. However, it is always useful to have as much medical history as possible. Contact our team to find out if the consultant you’d like to see will be happy to see you without a referral letter.
When do I need to pay the fees?
Broadly, you’ll be expected to pay fees along the following lines:
- Initial consultation fee – paid direct to consultant, usually invoiced to you after your appointment
- Scans and tests – following the scan or test, the hospital will generate an invoice for you at reception which will need to be paid prior to leaving.
- Outpatient treatments – there may be two separate fees for some treatments or investigations, one from the hospital and one from the consultant. The hospital fee is usually charged on the day of the treatment and the consultant will usually send you an invoice after your appointment. If there is a package available that includes the consultants fee this will be made clear from the Reception team
- Procedure fees – You will be sent a package price , which will include everything you need for your surgical care, including consultant and anaesthetist fees. This will need to paid in advance of your procedure date
What is the difference between a package price and standard self-pay rates?
Patients that are booked through the HSSH enquiries team will be eligible to receive a package price for self pay. This will include the hospital, consultant, anaesthetist and follow up fees as one price.
If you have booked your appointments directly through the consultant they may choose to invoice you separately for their surgical fees. In these cases the Hospital will charge the standard self pay rates.
Please note that package pricing and standard self pay rates may vary and not all consultants are available for package pricing. Please see below for the consultants available through HSSH for package pricing.
How long do I wait for a procedure after I have seen a consultant?
Consultants usually have regular theatre sessions at HSSH. Your consultant will offer you a procedure date that’s suitable for you both, that also allows enough time for your pre-admission assessment to be completed.
Procedures can very often be booked for just a few weeks in advance. Most procedures take place somewhere from 2 – 6 weeks from the date you have your consultation.
