Learn more about our back and spine treatments

Find out more about each of the back and spine interventions we offer at our central London hospital.

Spinal injections and nerve root blocks

Our extensive range of spinal injections can give you rapid pain relief for conditions including herniated discs and sciatica.

We offer steroid injections, spinal nerve root blocks, sacroiliac joint injections, facet joint injections, medial branch block injections, Ostenil injections, and trigger point injections to effectively treat different types of back pain. Your consultant will explain the pros and cons of each injection, and why they may or may not be suitable for your condition.

Treatable conditions with back pain medication include:
  • Back muscle strain
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal arthritis and joint pain
  • Degenerative disc disease and spondylosis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Cervical myelopathy
  • Spinal stenosis and spinal claudication
  • Spinal fracture
  • Kyphosis
  • Scoliosis

Spinal cord stimulation

Spinal cord stimulators send a low-level electrical pulse through your spinal cord to effectively alleviate chronic pain. The device is implanted into your back, so you’ll undergo a small operation to put the stimulator in place.

While spinal cord stimulation may not be effective for generic low back pain, it can be used to treat specific types of back pain if non-invasive methods haven’t worked, such nerve-related pain and post-surgical back pain.

Treatable conditions with spinal cord stimulation include:
  • Back muscle strain
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal arthritis and joint pain
  • Degenerative disc disease and spondylosis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Cervical myelopathy
  • Spinal stenosis and spinal claudication
  • Spinal fracture
  • Kyphosis
  • Scoliosis

If you’re interested in spinal cord stimulation as a back and spine treatment, seek a consultant’s advice, as alternative treatments for back pain may be preferred.

Spinal surgery

If non-invasive back pain treatments don’t work, many types of spinal surgery offer effective long-term relief for back pain.

At our London-based private hospital, you can be referred to our surgical team for a discectomy, laminectomy, decompression surgery, artificial disc replacement, spinal fusion surgery, and other operations to cure your back pain and give you permanent relief.

Treatable conditions with spinal surgery include:
  • Spinal stenosis and spinal claudication
  • Herniated discs
  • Severe or chronic sciatica
  • Spinal arthritis
  • Cervical myelopathy
  • Degenerative disc disease and spondylosis
  • Advanced ankylosing spondylitis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Spinal fracture
  • Cauda equina syndrome
  • Kyphosis
  • Scoliosis

Rhizotomy and radiofrequency nerve ablation

A rhizotomy is a procedure that removes specific nerve endings in your spine so they stop sending pain signals to your brain. Radiofrequency nerve ablation is a type of rhizotomy that uses heat to destroy the problematic nerve fibres, minimising pain so you can get back to your normal routine.

While the pain relief isn’t always permanent, rhizotomy and nerve ablation are very effective for managing pain from long-term back problems like arthritis, sacroiliac joint pain, and chronic sciatica.

Treatable conditions with rhizotomy and radiofrequency nerve ablation:
  • Spinal arthritis
  • Sacroiliac joint pain
  • Facet joint pain
  • Severe or chronic sciatica
  • Cerebral palsy

Peripheral nerve stimulation

Similar to spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation involves implanting a small device into your back that sends electrical impulses through your peripheral nerves. This creates a tingling sensation that masks any pain you might be feeling.

Peripheral nerve stimulation treats chronic nerve pain conditions like long-term sciatica.

Treatable conditions with peripheral nerve stimulation include:
  • Upper back muscle strain
  • Lower back muscle strain
  • Muscle strain in the middle back
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal arthritis and joint pain
  • Degenerative disc disease and spondylosis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Cervical myelopathy
  • Spinal stenosis and spinal claudication
  • Spinal fracture
  • Kyphosis
  • Scoliosis

Back pain physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for back pain involves exercises, manual manipulation, and other non-invasive treatment methods to strengthen and mobilise your back. This is often a first-line treatment for non-specific back pain.

Treatable conditions with peripheral nerve stimulation include:
  • Nerve pain (e.g. severe or chronic sciatica)
  • Post-surgical pain
  • Failed back surgery syndrome
  • Complex regional pain syndrome

Back pain medication

Certain drugs can help reduce back and spine pain. Our medical team can provide prescriptions for specific back pain medications that are proven to help you manage your condition.

Treatable conditions with spinal injections include:
  • Herniated discs
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal arthritis and joint pain
  • Spinal stenosis and spinal claudication
  • Cervical myelopathy
  • Degenerative disc disease and spondylosis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Non-specific back pain
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Scoliosis
